Re:Balance is a campaign about food: the lack of it, the wastage of it and most importantly, the imbalance of the global food system.
What’s the problem?
- It's not about how much food there is.
- It's about an unfair food system.
- We have failed to get the balance right.
Did you know...?
- Around the world today, nearly one billion people don't have enough to eat
- 1 in 7 people still go to bed hungry
- By 2050 there will be 9 billion people on the planet.
Wastage
- In the West we waste as much as 25% of the food we buy.
- Wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year, or £50 a month
From a religious perspective, Islam teaches us to cherish food and avoid wastage.
“It is He who produces both trellised and untrellised gardens, date palms, crops of diverse flavours, the olive, the pomegranate, alike yet different. So when they bear fruit, eat some of it, paying what is due on the day of harvest, but do not be wasteful: God does not like wasteful people. “ (Qur’an, 6:141)
“Be a community that calls for what is good, urges what is right, and forbids what is wrong: Those who do this are the successful ones” (Qur’an 3:104)
